Find answers to common questions about powerWatch and Loopback Systems below.
powerWatch is a standardized, utility-grade DER communications and monitoring solution that combines an on-site Edge device, encrypted backhaul, automated provisioning, and a cloud platform. It enables utilities to securely collect and centralize SCADA and tariff metering data from distributed generation sites, without custom integrations or repeated truck rolls delivering clean, reliable data that’s ready for operations.
Loopback integrates using the protocols utilities already rely on, including DNP3, Modbus, IEEE 2030.5, and REST APIs. The on-site Edge connects directly to meters and RTUs, normalizes the data, and securely forwards it over dual encrypted tunnels into your SCADA and collection systems. During commissioning, Loopback performs point-to-point verification and supports SCADA build and workflow integration to ensure clean, reliable data from day one.
powerWatch supports industry-standard protocols including DNP3, Modbus TCP, SNMP, and REST APIs. Security is built into the architecture, with dual encrypted tunnels (IPSec/TLS), AES-256 data encryption, X.509 certificate-based authentication, and alignment with standards such as NIST and NERC CIP. Firewall coordination and secure tunnel configuration are integrated into the deployment process to ensure data is protected in transit and at rest.
Site validation is required prior to quoting and deployment. Loopback conducts a cellular signal survey using defined thresholds, typically RSSI ≥ −85 dBm, RSRP ≥ −105 dBm, RSRQ ≥ −12 dB, and SINR ≥ 6 dB. If signal strength does not meet these benchmarks, options such as directional antennas or alternate backhaul solutions are evaluated. Each validation includes documentation, site photos, and a written report to reduce commissioning risk and delays.
powerWatch is built for continuous visibility. The platform collects diagnostic metrics (typically 15-minute resolution, with advanced configurations supporting 1-minute time series) and performs frequent device availability checks, often at 1-minute intervals.
If a device misses polls or goes offline, automated alerts are triggered with an initial notification within one hour, detailed follow-up updates, and confirmation once service is restored. Defined uptime targets and SLAs are included within the Monitor and Execute service tiers, ensuring clear expectations and operational accountability at scale.
The Edge is designed for standard utility environments and requires a dedicated 120 VAC circuit (landed on terminal), proper grounding, and mounting within a NEMA 4X enclosure.
Installation typically includes two CAT6 Ethernet runs (to meter and RTU). For non-co-located equipment, buried conduit and outdoor/wet-location rated Ethernet (minimum Cat5e/Cat6) compliant with NEC/NFPA standards are required.
Loopback coordinates the end-to-end communications setup, including encrypted tunnel turn-up/turn-down, certificate exchange, and firewall rule requests through your telecom or OSG teams.
SCADA point builds, internal firewall configurations, and final approvals remain under utility ownership. Loopback supports point-to-point verification and workflow coordination to ensure clean data delivery. If SCADA configuration is still pending but communications are validated, a Conditional Certificate of Operation (CCO) may be issued.
If service is suspended for administrative reasons (such as billing), restoration requires resolution of outstanding balances and completion of the reconnection process.
Once requirements are satisfied, Loopback coordinates reactivation and confirms service restoration. Clear steps, applicable fees, and expected timelines are communicated in advance to ensure a structured and predictable return to service.
Yes. powerWatch supports API-driven provisioning, template-based configuration, and automated validation to enable zero-touch and bulk deployments. This allows utilities to automate fleet onboarding, manage site configurations programmatically, and integrate seamlessly with external operational systems at scale.
